Notes on lenses

Every photograph is a negotiation with light. The aperture decides how much of it gets in; the focal length decides how much of the world comes with it. Open the aperture wide and the depth of field collapses to a sliver. Stop it down and the whole scene sharpens, at the cost of light.

Distortion is the part nobody prints on the box. Wide lenses bow straight lines outward into barrel distortion; long lenses pinch them inward. Good lens design rarely eliminates distortion so much as decides where to put it — and a little of it, used on purpose, can make a picture feel closer than it is.

Then there is the iris: a ring of thin blades that pivot together to open and close the aperture. Count the blades and you can predict the shape of every out-of-focus highlight. Seven blades draw heptagons. Twelve draw a near-perfect circle of light.

Coatings matter too. Each glass surface reflects a little light back, and a lens with a dozen elements can lose a surprising amount of contrast to flare. Modern coatings trade that loss for a faint violet or green cast you can sometimes see when you tilt the front element.

(01) Overview

Chrome's find bar looks for one thing at a time. Multi-Finder Pro takes a whole set of keywords, gives each its own color, and keeps a live count and next/previous controls for every one of them — so a long contract, paper or log reads like it's already been marked up.

(02) Features

What it does.

  1. 01

    Keyword pills

Type a word and press comma — it becomes a colored pill. Search runs as you type, no Enter needed.

  2. 02

    A color per term

Eight tuned highlight colors, fresh ones after that, and a picker for any keyword you want to own.

  3. 03

    Every match, navigable

Previous and next for each keyword, a position counter, and markers down the scrollbar.

  4. 04

    Partial or exact

Match inside words, or switch to whole words only when “cat” shouldn’t find “category”.

  5. 05

    Library & saved sets

Keep the keywords you reuse, group them into sets, then pin, tag and reload them in one click.

  6. 06

    Fits the page

Marker, pill or underline highlights, in an overlay that picks light or dark to match the site.

  7. 07

    Import & export

Move your library as JSON — merge it with what you have, or replace it outright.

  8. 08

    Accounts & sync

Sign in with email, Google or GitHub to carry your keyword sets between machines.

Keywords take these in order; after the eighth, each new term gets a fresh hue, and the text on top switches between dark and light to keep its contrast.
